A Study of Altered Concentration of Plasma ANP in Thyroid Disorder

Abstract
ABSTRACT
@EN In order to clarify the effect of thyroid hormone on the plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) concentration, plasma ANP concentrations were measured in 13 normal control subjects, 10 patients with hypothyroidism and 13 patients with
hyperthyroidism, where all subjects were female and first diagnosed cases. Among the hypothyroidism patients, 5 had Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 3 postpartum thyroiditis and 2 primary myxedema whereas all of the hyperthyroidism patients had Graves'
disease.
Patients with heart failure, valvular heart disease, atrial fibrillation, paroxysmal atrial tachycardia, liver disease, renal disease and patients taking diuretics and antihypertensive drugs were all excluded from the experiment to prevent their
influence on plasma ANP concentration.
Plasma ANP concentration was increased in patients with hyperthyroidism (130.1¡¾29.0pg/ml) compared with the value in patients with hypothyroidism (112.1¡¾12.8pg/ml) and in normal control subjects (114.0¡¾27.5pg/ml), but there was no significant
statistical difference between them. But in all three groups together there was a significant correlation between concentration of circulating ANP and thyroid hormones (n=36, T3 r=0.48, FT4 r=0.45, p<0.01).
In conclusion, there was a significant positive correlation between plasma ANP concentration and thyroid hormones. Further studies should be investigated to identify the thyroid hormones as one of regulatory factors effecting directly on the
secretion
of ANP. (J Kor Endocrinol 8:51~58, 1993).
